Texas leads as October brings the next big tests
The top holds while the middle moves
Texas leads the October 4 AP poll after a weekend off, and the first five places are unchanged. The larger story sits underneath: Missouri’s rout of Florida reshuffled the SEC’s middle, Pittsburgh turned an unbeaten start into a ranking, and several teams slipped despite winning. October now offers a useful change of pace. Georgia visits Alabama, UCLA visits Oregon, and Indiana travels to unbeaten Nebraska. Those games should provide stronger comparisons than another week of arguing over small poll movements.

Texas has earned the position and still has work ahead
The Longhorns’ opening four games include a 24-23 win over Ohio State and a 20-17 win at Tennessee. That is real evidence against capable opposition, although the narrow margins also leave room for challengers. Oklahoma is next in Dallas, followed by Florida and Ole Miss. For Texas, the question is whether a team that has already handled pressure can start creating more breathing room.
Georgia and Alabama arrive at their meeting unbeaten and 3-0 in the SEC. Georgia’s 38-14 win over Vanderbilt featured a decisive defensive adjustment: the Commodores gained only 61 yards after halftime. Alabama has scored at least 45 points in every game and just put 56 on Mississippi State. Its four takeaways helped make that result lopsided. The matchup asks a straightforward question: can Georgia disrupt Alabama’s rhythm without leaving its own offense in a race?

The SEC offers evidence in both directions
Missouri supplied the weekend’s clearest correction. A week after losing at Mississippi State, the Tigers beat Florida 45-17, their largest margin over a top-10 opponent. Jamal Roberts ran for 211 yards, and Missouri scored 35 consecutive points. The result supports renewed attention; a follow-up against Texas A&M will test whether it was the start of a sustained change.
Florida’s last two Saturdays explain the difficulty of sorting the conference. The Gators beat Ole Miss 52-28, then lost by 28 themselves. Ole Miss still owns a win over LSU, while Mississippi State owns a win over Missouri. Tennessee sits nearby with a three-point loss to Texas and a ground-led recovery against Auburn. LSU’s 731 yards against McNeese were impressive production, but Kentucky on the road will provide a more useful comparison. A single head-to-head result helps; this collection of results resists a tidy ordering.

The Big Ten has two races taking shape
Ohio State and Indiana remain close to the national lead. The Buckeyes’ only loss came by one point at Texas, and they outgained Iowa 484-238 in their latest win. Indiana answered a close Northwestern game by producing 593 yards against Rutgers. Josh Hoover has 15 touchdown passes and no interceptions this season. Indiana’s trip to Nebraska comes before the October 17 meeting with Ohio State, so looking ahead would be costly.
Oregon and UCLA offer a different kind of comparison. The Ducks recovered from their Oklahoma State loss with wins over Portland State and USC. UCLA is 4-0 after beating Cal, San Diego State, Purdue and Maryland. Autzen should reveal more about the Bruins’ ceiling while giving Oregon another substantial chance to rebuild its résumé. USC, meanwhile, needed a comeback from 21-10 down to beat Washington. Iowa’s offense managed only 39 rushing yards against Ohio State. Both have immediate road tests, at Penn State and Washington respectively.

The Big 12 keeps its unbeaten options open
BYU, Texas Tech and Utah have yet to lose. Their latest evidence looks quite different. BYU escaped a wet night at TCU with a 17-10 victory, helped by four sacks and a late Bear Bachmeier touchdown. Texas Tech trailed Colorado at halftime before four interceptions helped turn the game into a 29-7 win. Utah returns from its open date with four wins, including a 31-17 result at Iowa State.
The next useful checkpoints are close: BYU hosts Iowa State on Friday and Notre Dame a week later. Utah hosts Kansas before later meetings with Houston and BYU. Texas Tech has a week off before Arizona State. Oklahoma State remains one of the most difficult teams to place, with a loss at Tulsa followed by a win over Oregon. Houston’s 27 unanswered points against UCF kept its one-loss season alive, but the early deficit is something to fix before Kansas State.

Notre Dame stayed unbeaten with a 37-26 road win at North Carolina and hosts Stanford before traveling to BYU. Miami’s 41-13 win at Clemson was more decisive: six sacks, just 55 rushing yards allowed, and a third ACC road victory. The Hurricanes get an open week before Florida State.
At the other end of the poll, Pittsburgh earned entry after a 35-33 Friday win at Virginia Tech. SMU beat Boston College with only 218 yards of offense, while Boise State opened Pac-12 conference play by beating Utah State 37-18. These are useful results with different implications. Pitt has an unbeaten record to defend; SMU needs cleaner offense; Boise State now has a road conference test at Fresno State.

How to read the numbers
This feature uses the AP order as its index and shows the Coaches Poll separately. AP voters are journalists and broadcasters; the Coaches Poll represents participating coaches. They can differ substantially: Indiana is fifth with the coaches and seventh in AP, while Oklahoma State and Boise State are outside the Coaches Top 25. Predictive systems such as ESPN’s FPI estimate future strength. The program labels and assessments here are editorial analysis of verified results. No current numerical predictive rating was verified for this edition, so none is displayed. AP and Coaches positions should not be read as playoff seeding.

A ranking is one kind of evidence.
Ap
Media-voted ranking. The program list follows the AP order, reproduced by NCAA.com for the October 4 release.
Coaches
Separate ranking by participating coaches. A null rank means the team is outside that poll's Top 25; the two affected AP teams received votes.
Editorial
The status labels, season interpretation, why_here and watch_next fields are original editorial analysis based on the linked results. They are not an official explanation of any voter’s ballot.
Predictive
Predictive ratings estimate future team strength. No dated, current numeric model rating was verified for this edition. Numeric rating fields are intentionally absent.
