Alabama, Oregon, Penn State and the SEC contenders enter October with different questions

October 5, 2026 · Results through October 3 · AP poll October 4. The older Coaches’ Room retains its original date; these seven cards show the current leadership.

October puts the contenders under pressure

Alabama has arrived at its biggest early-season checkpoint unbeaten. Oregon has repaired some of the damage from a September road loss. Penn State is trying to stop two conference defeats from defining the opening chapter of a new coaching era. These are different program stories, and the distinction matters when comparing the national brands.

The October 4 AP poll places Alabama sixth and Oregon 13th, with Penn State outside the Top 25. Texas and Georgia lead the poll; Ole Miss and LSU sit ninth and 10th. Those positions describe this week's voting, not a guarantee of playoff selection. AP Top 25 after Week 5 ↗

A longer SEC test

The SEC's 2026 schedule introduces nine conference games per school, alongside the league's requirement for an additional power-conference opponent. That adds another conference result to every contender's season and makes recovery after a disappointing Saturday especially important. SEC nine-game schedule announcement ↗

Oregon and Penn State compete in the Big Ten. Their relevance here is national: they offer two useful comparisons with the SEC's leading programs, while pursuing a separate conference race. The analysis below weighs current results, coaching continuity and the next verified opponents. Big Ten 2026 statistics and results ↗

Alabama has the offense to make its case

Kalen DeBoer's third Alabama season has opened 5–0, including 3–0 in the SEC. The latest result was a 56–23 win at Mississippi State on October 3. Alabama has scored at least 45 points in every game; its five results add up to 49.6 points per game. Alabama 2026 schedule ↗

There is more continuity behind that start than the constant comparison with the Nick Saban era can suggest. DeBoer took Alabama to an 11–4 finish and a playoff win in 2025, and his contract was extended through 2033 in April. DeBoer extension through 2033 ↗

Analysis: scoring consistency is Alabama's clearest strength. The question is how comfortably that production survives an opponent capable of limiting possessions and punishing defensive mistakes. Georgia visits October 10, followed by a trip to Tennessee and a home game against Texas A&M. That sequence should say considerably more about this team's ceiling than another comfortable September win would. Alabama is playing like a serious contender; the next step is supplying the strongest evidence for it. Alabama 2026 schedule ↗

Oregon has responded but the next answer is still pending

Oregon is 3–1 overall and 1–0 in Big Ten play after beating USC 41–27 on September 26, then taking a bye. The Ducks' loss came at Oklahoma State, 39–31. Their four-game scoring average is 47.5, but the 84–0 Portland State result heavily influences that number. The win in Los Angeles is the more useful recent evidence against major-conference opposition. Oregon 2026 schedule ↗

That victory also demonstrated quarterback depth. After Dante Moore left with an injury, Dylan Raiola completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Moore's availability requires a fresh team update; this snapshot makes no assumption about the UCLA starter. Oregon official USC recap ↗

Analysis: Dan Lanning's fifth season offers an established framework, including the 2024 Big Ten title, and the USC response showed the offense could function through disruption. The risk is treating one rebound as proof that the earlier defensive problems are resolved. UCLA visits October 10, Nebraska follows October 17, and Oregon travels to Illinois October 24. Ohio State awaits in Columbus on November 7. Oregon Dan Lanning biography ↗ Oregon 2026 schedule ↗

Penn State needs an immediate conference response

Penn State's 3–2 record divides cleanly: three nonconference wins, then losses to Wisconsin, 24–20, and Northwestern, 34–13. Matt Campbell is in his first season after a decade at Iowa State. His appointment was announced in December 2025; this is a new staff's first October test. Penn State 2026 schedule ↗ Penn State Matt Campbell biography ↗

The Northwestern defeat raised a concrete concern. The Wildcats rushed for 413 yards, while Penn State's leading rusher, Carson Hansen, finished with 19. Rocco Becht threw for 243 yards, but Penn State trailed 24–7 at halftime. Northwestern official Penn State recap ↗ Penn State official Northwestern recap ↗

Analysis: Campbell brings a documented record of building sustained competitiveness at Iowa State. That is a credible longer-term foundation, but the present problem is producing conference-level consistency on both lines of scrimmage. A White Out against USC on October 10 provides an immediate chance to change the direction of the season. The following trip to Michigan makes a third straight loss particularly costly in practical terms, even without pretending the entire year hinges on one game. Georgia supplies the continuity benchmark

Georgia is 5–0 and 3–0 in the SEC after a 38–14 win over Vanderbilt. Kirby Smart is in his 11th season, with national titles from the 2021 and 2022 seasons and SEC titles in 2024 and 2025 among the program's recent credentials. Georgia 2026 schedule ↗ Georgia Kirby Smart biography ↗

Analysis: that continuity is a meaningful advantage, and Georgia has allowed 13.4 points per game through five contests. Yet the trip to Alabama on October 10 is a much sharper test of its current position. The contrast is compelling: Georgia's defensive results against Alabama's relentless scoring start. Texas already has a national measuring stick

Texas enters its October 10 meeting with Oklahoma at 4–0, with a 24–23 victory over Ohio State and a 20–17 win at Tennessee already on the schedule. Steve Sarkisian is in his sixth season after three consecutive 10-win campaigns. Texas 2026 schedule ↗ Texas Steve Sarkisian biography ↗

Analysis: those narrow wins demonstrate that Texas has already survived difficult situations. They also leave less room for assuming comfortable separation from its peers. The immediate task is carrying that execution into the rivalry game, with Florida and Ole Miss following in Austin. Texas 2026 schedule ↗

LSU and Ole Miss are testing new leadership

Lane Kiffin's first LSU team is 4–1 and 1–1 in the SEC. Since losing 32–24 at Ole Miss, it has beaten Texas A&M 35–6 and McNeese 63–14. Kentucky away on October 10 is the next opportunity to establish a stronger road record. LSU 2026 schedule ↗ LSU Lane Kiffin biography ↗

Pete Golding's first full season as Ole Miss head coach has produced a 3–1 start, including 1–1 in the league. Beating LSU was followed by a 52–28 loss at Florida. After a bye, the Rebels visit Vanderbilt on October 10. Ole Miss 2026 schedule ↗ Ole Miss Pete Golding biography ↗

Analysis: LSU's response has been convincing at home; Ole Miss has shown it can win a major matchup but still needs steadier defensive results. Their September meeting is valuable head-to-head evidence. The following weekends will show whether either program can turn a strong afternoon into a reliable standard. That is the central October question across this group: which strengths keep showing up when the opponent and setting change?

Leadership, without mythology.
