Fresno State and San Diego State open the rebuilt Pac-12. San Jose State remains in the Mountain West. Sacramento State begins its first FBS season as a football-only member of the MAC. The state has plenty of football and no common football map.\n\nThis State Desk report argues that California's problem is not an absence of audience. It is an uneven relationship between program and place. Official 2025 NCAA averages range from USC's 67,782 and Fresno State's 38,030 to San Jose State's 13,997. Those numbers describe several kinds of attachment, access, routine, and unused possibility. They do not describe a state in which nobody cares.\n\nThe report reads all eight FBS rooms through their current 2026 chapter. USC remains the national football capital. UCLA begins again under Bob Chesney while facing the long campus-to-Rose-Bowl route. Cal pairs Tosh Lupoi with general manager Ron Rivera. Stanford pairs Tavita Pritchard with Andrew Luck. Fresno State owns the state's healthiest civic relationship. San Diego State has a young facility searching for weekly ritual. San Jose State remains resourceful by design. Sacramento State makes the most audacious leap.\n\nCalifornia football participation is also changing rather than disappearing. Reporting on the 2024-25 CIF survey counted 91,411 boys in 11-player football and 19,921 girls in flag football, an 84 percent year-over-year increase in flag. Any statewide football story that omits the version of the game growing fastest is already behind the state.\n\nThe 2026 schedule quietly creates a California circuit: San Jose State at USC, UCLA at Cal, Fresno State at USC, Sacramento State at Fresno State, Fresno State at San Jose State, San Diego State at Fresno State, and Stanford at Cal. PointCast proposes using those games as the spine of a season-long California Cup.\n\nThe five-part California Football Compact asks programs to play the state, build the student route, sound like their actual region, place high-school and girls' flag inside the same story, and keep a public season table. The compact is a PointCast editorial proposal, not adopted policy.\n\nThe answer to whether California should care more is yes, differently. California does not need to imitate the SEC or pretend football is its only civic calendar. Its advantage is the number of Californias inside it: sunset kickoffs, regional food and music, Mexican American, Asian American, and Black California traditions, agricultural communities, aerospace towns, surf cities, great campuses, and beautiful alternatives competing for Saturday.\n\nCalifornia does not need to become more like the South. It needs to become more like California, together, on Saturdays. College football should care more about California before asking California to care more about college football.",
