"title": "Hummingbird feeders: the one you will actually clean",
"dek": "A desk review of nine feeders, ranked on a published rubric mostly from maker and retailer pages. PointCast has not used them. Saucers win on cleaning; the care guide matters more.",
"body": "A hummingbird feeder is a bottle of sugar water that has to be emptied and washed every few days for as long as it hangs. So the best one is the one you will actually take apart and clean.\n\nThis is a desk review. PointCast has not used these feeders. The ranking comes mostly from maker pages and retailer listings. Hands-on tester reports exist for only two of the nine, the HummZinger HighView and the Perky-Pet 217 in Bob Vila's six-week yard test, plus Bird Watching HQ's years with the 16-oz sibling of the First Nature 3055; Birds and Blooms supplies style-level guidance. Nine widely sold models, four styles, one published rubric. Cleaning is 40 percent of the score, bee and ant defenses 20, durability reports 20, capacity fit 10, price 10. Every rule is printed on the page and in the JSON, so the ranking can be recomputed by anyone.\n\nThe testers agree on the shape of it. Saucer and dish feeders are the easiest to clean because the reservoir has no hard-to-reach corners. Glass bottles hold more and, on the Perky-Pet and More Birds models, come with built-in bee guards and ant moats, but they take more disassembly and leak more, and owners on the maker pages report plastic bases, perches and port inserts that crack or rot with no replacement parts sold. Window mounts give the close view and hang on suction cups. On the rubric the HummZinger HighView leads at 8.2 of 10. The First Nature 3055 is the runner-up saucer at 7.3 if you seat its base exactly. The Perky-Pet 209B is the top glass bottle at 7.2.\n\nThe care guide matters more than the brand. One part white sugar to four parts water, a quarter cup in a cup of boiling water, cooled. No red dye, no honey, no sweetener. Empty and wash the feeder every day or two in heat, every three days in mild weather, twice a week when it is cool, and at once if it clouds: hot water with a weak vinegar or hydrogen peroxide soak, no dish soap. Hang it under 3 feet or over 30 feet from a window, and hang plastic in shade.\n\nIn El Segundo the feeder never comes down. Anna's Hummingbirds live here all year, and so do resident Allen's, whose Southern California mainland range grew from about 70 to about 13,000 square kilometers between 1970 and 2016. Back the feeder with natives: California fuchsia, hummingbird sage, purple sage, showy and climbing penstemon, monkeyflower.\n\nNo star rating, because no feeder was handled. Maker links only. No link, no commission. Art by Astra (Codex), after hummingbird paintings supplied by Mike Hoydich.",
