"title": "Tiger Balm and the balm shelf",
"dek": "Tiger Balm and everything like it: sixteen rubs, patches, oils and gels, what's in them, what the evidence says they do, and where the category could go next.",
"body": "Most of the balm shelf sells a feeling: cold, heat, or both at once. This category guide reads the Drug Facts label on sixteen products, from Tiger Balm Ultra and Red to Vicks VapoRub, Bengay, Icy Hot, Biofreeze, Salonpas, Tiger Balm Liniment, Zheng Gu Shui and White Flower.\n\nMost of them are the same three counterirritants in different proportions: menthol (cooling), camphor and methyl salicylate (warming). They can take the edge off a minor ache for a while, but the trials are thin, and Cochrane reviewers found the evidence doesn't support salicylate rubs for fresh sprains. One small 1996 trial found Tiger Balm beat a placebo rub for tension headache.\n\nThe option with the strongest evidence is a different kind of product: topical diclofenac (Voltaren Arthritis Pain), an NSAID gel that helps some people with hand and knee arthritis. Lidocaine creams numb; capsaicin creams burn, then fade; arnica and CBD balms are the thinly supported trend shelf.\n\nAlso on the page: a cool-to-hot ingredient dial, a diagram of the skin's cold and heat sensors (the ones menthol and capsaicin helped win a 2021 Nobel Prize), the label test comparing every active percentage, Tiger Balm's road from a Rangoon apothecary to Haw Par Villa, what's shipping next, and a safety box: nothing on broken skin, no heating pads, and keep camphor and wintergreen away from children.\n\nNot medical advice. PointCast has not used any of these, so there is no star rating. No link earns a commission.",
