"body": "Breakwater is a breakout game the way a home computer in 1983 would have shown it, drawn and sounded by a browser in 2026. Fourteen columns, eight rows, two rows each of red, orange, green and yellow worth seven, five, three and one, the arcade's own rule. The ball speeds up after the fourth and twelfth hit and when it first touches orange and red. Six wall patterns cycle, and one of them spells the machine you chose.\n\nThe game keeps a mood with you. Rallies raise its energy; a lost ball lowers its calm; time brings it back. Four words name where it is. DAWN is warming up. FLOW is a long rally with the music opened up. RUSH is hot colors, raster bars in the border, a faster arpeggio and, in a long enough rally, a second ball. DRIFT is what happens after losses: the paddle widens, the ball slows, the notes thin out. You set a dial, CALM, PLAY or RUSH, and the game relaxes toward it. In CALM there is no game over.\n\nTwo tributes to pick from. The Atari 800XL mode is the Graphics 0 blue with a black border, light-blue text and raw square-wave sound with a noise bite, the POKEY spirit. The Commodore 64 mode is the blue field inside a light-blue border, with a resonant filter sweep on every voice, the SID spirit. Each boots with its own READY prompt before the wall appears. Nothing is emulated and nothing is copied: the pixel font, the patterns, the music and the palettes are original, written for this page.\n\nIt is built for a phone held upright and for a desktop in full screen. Drag anywhere to steer. The mood tape from your session stays in your browser, and when you leave, the game hands its mood to the town.\n\n[Play Breakwater](/breakwater).
