Headphones for music, calls and the rest of the day

Five exact configurations, chosen by routine rather than a universal “best.”

Choose the headphone around your day: sealed earbuds for compact carry, over-ear ANC for travel, physical earhooks for sport, or a simple on-ear pair for a smaller budget. For an Apple-heavy routine, AirPods Pro 3 is the first configuration to examine. For mixed devices and longer over-ear listening, compare Sony’s WH-1000XM6. Neither is a universal sound-quality winner.

Music, calls and exercise impose different requirements. A microphone feature list cannot tell you how a voice sounds in wind, and an ANC claim cannot tell you whether the fit stays comfortable for a flight. Use the facts here to shortlist, then audition within a suitable return policy.

Music: fit before codec marketing

A good seal changes bass and isolation in earbuds. Glasses and head shape change over-ear fit. Compare with music you know at matched, comfortable levels rather than treating “hi-res” as a listening verdict. Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 for XM6; the source must support the chosen format. Apple says ordinary Bluetooth connections do not deliver lossless Apple Music. AirPods Max 2 supports a separate wired USB-C lossless path.

Calls: test the actual room and software

Shortlist microphone and switching features, then make a sample call using your usual meeting app. Quiet-room calls, a moving street and a busy café are different tests. Apple and Beats advertise Voice Isolation; Sony advertises microphone noise suppression. This guide has no recorded call samples or independent microphone rankings.

Travel: ANC plus a fallback

Sony XM6 combines over-ear ANC, a long claimed music runtime and passive 3.5mm playback. An airplane entertainment socket may still need an adapter. AirPods Pro is easier to pocket but depends on its battery and ear seal. AirPods Max 2 offers Apple integration and wired USB-C lossless, though weight and supported source connections deserve attention. Do not compare these battery figures as if tested under one protocol.

Sport: retention and awareness

Powerbeats Pro 2 earns its shortlist place for earhooks and physical controls; AirPods Pro 3 offers a smaller alternative with a different fit and resistance rating. Both still need a real fit check. Water resistance is not waterproofing. Transparency mode is not a guarantee of hearing traffic or announcements; choose listening behavior appropriate to the surroundings.

Budget: spend on the missing feature

WH-CH520 covers basic Bluetooth music and calls at a much lower displayed price, with multipoint and long claimed playback. It omits ANC and wired fallback. If those are essential, saving for a different class may be more useful than buying a cheap model twice. The exact Black listing price is a dated observation, not a lasting discount promise.
