Loadout

What to bring.

Core

  • Stadium seat with a back

Aluminum is cold at night, hot at a day game, and hard either way. A back makes the third quarter bearable.

  • Clear bag, or no bag

Many districts now run a clear-bag policy at the gate. Check the school's athletics page before you go.

  • Ticket bought ahead

Many districts sell digital-only tickets now. Buy before you are in the gate line with bad signal.

  • Small bills

The snack bar and the 50/50 raffle may still be cash. Boosters keep the program running.

  • Phone battery pack

Video, photos, the ride plan and the walk back to the car all run on the same phone.

  • Post-game bag for your playerParent of a player

Real food, a water bottle and a dry shirt in the car. Teams often stay after for a talk.

  • Water and a snack for the band kidBand, cheer or spirit parent

Band and spirit kids often eat early and march late. Ask the director what is allowed in the stands.

Nice to have

  • Small flashlight or headlamp

The parking lot after the game is darker than the field.

  • Compact binoculars

Find your number on the line of scrimmage, or your kid in the band block.

  • EarplugsBand, cheer or spirit parent · Just here for the game

If you sit by the band or the drumline, you will want them. Kids' ears too.

Timeline

How it goes.

  1. Before you leave

Check the bag policy, ticket method and whether it is a home or away game. Agree on the ride home with your kid.

  2. Arrive

Get there 30–45 minutes before kickoff for parking and the gate line. Sit near the 30 for sightlines, higher up for the whole field.

  3. During

Snack bar at the end of the first quarter, not halftime. Cheer for every kid. Leave the coaching to the coaches.

  4. After

Wait where your player knows to find you, not at the locker room door. Let the lot clear for ten minutes if you can.

The moves

What helps.

  • Home side and visitor side are separate. Know which one you are on before you buy food and climb.
  • Bring your seat back to the car at halftime only if you are leaving. Seats are how families save a row.
  • If your kid is injured, follow the athletic trainer's lead. Stay in the stands unless they wave you down.

Skip

  • Big coolers (usually not allowed)
  • Umbrellas that block the row behind you
  • Air horns

Watch for

  • Heat at early-season and day games: aluminum bleachers in direct sun get hot enough to burn skin. Sit on something.
  • At the first thunder, head into a substantial building or an enclosed metal-roofed vehicle with the windows closed. Bleachers and tents are not shelter. Remain sheltered for at least 30 minutes following the last thunder, and follow venue instructions.
