Comfortable at the courts, as a player

Hard courts, a paddle rack, the stack of waiting players, and almost never enough shade between games.

Court shoes, cold water and something to do between games that is not standing in the sun.

Loadout

What to bring.

Core

  • Court shoes

Built for side-to-side. Running shoes are built for forward and roll ankles on the lateral.

  • Your paddle, plus an overgrip

Fresh grip when the sweat starts. It changes more than people think.

  • Big insulated bottle with ice

Courts radiate heat. Sip at every changeover.

  • Small towel

Hands and grip. Dry hands keep the paddle where you put it.

  • Visor or cap and sunglasses

Lobs into the sun are a real shot. So is squinting for three hours.

  • Sunscreen

Apply before you play and again at the break. Backs of legs and the neck burn first.

  • Electrolyte packetsLeague night · Tournament day

An option after several hours of sustained sweating. Water and regular meals are enough for most shorter outings.

  • Easy food for between roundsTournament day

Bananas, pretzels, a sandwich in the cooler. Tournament days have long gaps and short warnings.

  • Backup paddleTournament day

Paddles crack. Tournaments do not wait.

Nice to have

  • Outdoor ballsOpen play · League night

Know what the court plays with. Bring two in case one cracks.

  • Compact camp chairTournament day

Rest your legs between matches. Sitting in shade is recovery.

  • Dry shirt for the drive home

    Small thing, big upgrade.

Timeline

How it goes.

  1. Before

Eat a real meal two or three hours out. Check the court's sign-up system: paddle rack, app, or the stack.

  2. Arrive

Warm up five minutes: walk, side shuffles, dinks at the kitchen. First games are where calves and Achilles complain.

  3. Between games

Shade, sit, water. Re-grip if your hand is slipping.

  4. After

Cool down and stretch. Refill water before the drive.

The moves

What helps.

  • Learn the court's rotation rules on day one. Stack paddles, call the score, and keep games moving.
  • Call out stray balls on your court with 'ball on court' and stop the point. Return balls between points, not during.
  • On a tournament day, check in at the desk first, then find your court, then find your shade.

Skip

  • Running shoes
  • Cotton socks on a long day
  • Waiting in the sun when the shade is twenty feet away

Watch for

  • Courts in the sun can be much hotter than the forecast. Watch for heat exhaustion and stop early on a 98° day.
  • Backpedaling for lobs causes falls. Turn and move, do not run backward.
