The future of the library
The first real issue of What I Keep Noticing treats one small public library as a town’s memory, room, access layer, workshop, and public voice
A library is a protocol with a roof. Its deepest technology is permission: permission to enter without a purchase in mind, to stay without explaining yourself, to ask a beginner’s question, to use a shared resource, and to leave with more capability than you brought in.
Issue 01 of What I Keep Noticing begins at the El Segundo Public Library. Its present-tense civic stack already includes local-history stewardship, digital collections, four school-library partnerships, study rooms, public art, recurring programs, volunteer support, and a California State Library Parks Pass.
The issue then proposes three deliberately small experiments: a Borrowable Town Shelf, monthly Town Memory Saturdays, and six Public Capability Hours. They are clearly labeled as PointCast proposals—not announced library programs—and designed as reversible pilots rather than grand redesigns.
Three original editorial plates, a five-protocol interactive civic stack, a printable field sheet, eight official sources, and a machine-readable JSON companion turn the essay into a magazine people can use.
