The number comes from KLAX, 4.7 kilometres up the coast, not from a model. It is the hour a
broken or overcast deck below 3,000 feet gave up and stayed gone.
A garden is slow on purpose. A broadcast is too. This one keeps a log.

Blue is open sky. The row starts at sunrise, which is why the left edge draws its own curve
through the year without being asked. May Gray, June Gloom and Fogust are the wide grey bands;
February is the thin one.

THE DEFINITION
What "the sky opened" means here.
Under the layer means a broken or overcast deck — or an indefinite ceiling, which is fog on the ground — below 3,000 feet. Few and scattered do not count. You can see sky through them.
The lowest deck is often reported in the second or third layer, not the first, so each cover is paired with its own height by index and the lowest one wins.
The sky opened at the first hourly report after sunrise with no such deck, where every report in the following 2 hours is also free of it.
A day with no deck anywhere around sunrise has no layer to burn off. It is not a fast morning. It is a different kind of morning.
If the sky clears in the last hour we watch and nothing follows to confirm it, the day reads as never opened. We do not claim what we could not watch.
It is arguable, it is local, and it is written down. The rule lives in
src/lib/burnoff.ts, runs at read time, and is never cached as a status —
there is no scheduler on this site to write one. Change the numbers and the whole
twelve months redraws.

Los Angeles International — KLAX — ASOS, 4.7 km up the coast from El Segundo. Hourly routine reports at :53. Archive: Iowa Environmental Mesonet ASOS archive — mesonet.agron.iastate.edu. Pulled by hand with
node scripts/fetch-burnoff.mjs on 2026-07-26 and committed;
the build never touches the network. Reanalysis grids were tried first and thrown out — a
25 km cell snaps inland of the shore and reports June mornings backwards.

Each plane is someone arriving from somewhere. Bless one of them.

Carries one full eight-week cycle, hands the calendar to the next Layer at the Pier Closer.
FIVE PRINCIPLES
What the cohort agreed to.

The place is the curriculum. We do not import a meditation, we let the location teach the breath.

No app required. The /meditate room is a tool, not the room. The room is El Segundo.

One artifact per sit. Small, public, and dated. A note, a photo, a count, a name.
04
Silence outranks insight. We do not summarize what someone said in the round of names.
05
The marine layer is the bell. If you cannot hear traffic, planes, surf, or fog, you are sitting in the wrong place.
