POINTCAST OBJECT LIBRARY

EL SEGUNDO / SIX SMALL POSSIBILITIES

Good things.
Less owning.
More trying.

An object library for the way we live.
Borrow an idea. Try a ritual. Make it better.

CONCEPT CATALOG + BROWSER DEMO
No physical inventory or borrowing service.

Six original object characters with square glasses: a coral focus dial, yellow lamp, blue pocket companion, green shade clip, mint window signal and pink rain sleeve
THE EVERYDAY SIXORIGINAL CONCEPT ILLUSTRATIONS / 01

01 / UTILITY, BEFORE MORE STUFF

Start with a need.
End with a better idea.

The best object might be the one you only need sometimes. Or the one you can improve before anyone makes a hundred of them.

This El Segundo concept connects a shared object shelf to a proposed Local Object Factory. A useful local loop: name a small problem, try a modest answer, record what happened and repair or rethink it.

02 / THE CONCEPT CATALOG

Six objects.
A hundred little uses.

Each character has one clear job and one question. Try the suggested ritual with something you already have before imagining a new device.

Showing all six concept objects.

OL / 01CONCEPT
TURN, an original focus dial character concept with square glasses

Focus Dial

TURN

Give the next twenty minutes a shape.

A proposed tactile timer: choose a short interval, press to begin, then stop and decide what comes next. A small physical start instead of another open tab.

Use / experiment / limits
Try the ritual
Write one task. Set twenty minutes. Put the phone aside. When the interval ends, stand, look away and decide whether to continue.
First experiment
Compare a paper timer sketch with your current start ritual. Does one clear physical action make beginning easier?
Proposed construction
Rotary control / visible timer / removable foot
Know the boundary
Concept only. No hardware has been built; the library demo does not run a timer or measure productivity.
OL / 02CONCEPT
GLOW, an original ambient lamp character concept with square glasses

Ambient Lamp

GLOW

A softer end to the day.

An imagined dimmable desk lamp with a warm evening setting and a simple off control. Light for a reading corner, a shared table or the moment work ends.

Use / experiment / limits
Try the ritual
Choose one evening activity. Compare a low, indirect light with the room’s usual lighting. Keep enough light to move and read comfortably.
First experiment
Try the ritual using an existing lamp. Notice glare, shadows and whether everyone in the room can use the control.
Proposed construction
Diffused shade / physical dimmer / repairable base
Know the boundary
Concept only. Electrical safety, brightness, power use and accessibility need testing. No sleep or health effect is claimed.
OL / 03CONCEPT
PIP, an original pocket companion character concept with square glasses

Pocket Companion

PIP

Keep the thought. Keep walking.

A proposed pocket-sized thought keeper with a deliberate button, a visible recording state and a review-and-erase ritual. Start with a paper card before adding electronics.

Use / experiment / limits
Try the ritual
Take a familiar walk. Stop somewhere safe and jot one thought on a pocket card. Review it when you get home; keep only what you want.
First experiment
Compare a small paper card with a phone note. Test whether either helps without interrupting the walk or drawing attention from your surroundings.
Proposed construction
Tactile button / visible state / explicit erase
Know the boundary
Concept only. No recording, microphone, transcription or AI is active here. Any future recording requires deliberate consent and a clear storage policy.
OL / 04CONCEPT
BRIM, an original shade clip character concept with square glasses

Shade Clip

BRIM

A little shade, thoughtfully placed.

A speculative clip-on shade for a small stationary work surface. It studies a useful question: can a removable part make one outdoor reading spot more comfortable?

Use / experiment / limits
Try the ritual
First use existing fixed shade. Compare surface glare and comfort at two times of day. Sketch where a small shade would help.
First experiment
Make a paper form study indoors. A future outdoor prototype needs wind, attachment and material testing before anyone relies on it.
Proposed construction
Replaceable fabric / simple clip / small footprint
Know the boundary
Concept only. No tested wind resistance, UV protection or cooling performance. Never attach an untested shade above people or use it during strong wind.
OL / 05CONCEPT
PANE, an original window signal character concept with square glasses

Window Signal

PANE

A moment to check before opening.

A proposed manual window tag with three readable states: check outside, open if suitable, close if unsuitable. Words and shapes lead; color is a second cue.

Use / experiment / limits
Try the ritual
Check outdoor temperature, air quality and current advisories before ventilating. Consider security, noise and household needs; update a paper tag yourself.
First experiment
Try the three-state paper tag for a day. Does it help a household share a decision without implying an automatic safety judgment?
Proposed construction
Readable labels / tactile slider / no sensor required
Know the boundary
Concept only. Not an air-quality sensor, purifier, smoke detector or assurance of safe air. No live conditions or automated ventilation decision is supplied.
OL / 06CONCEPT
SHELL, an original rain sleeve character concept with square glasses

Rain Sleeve

SHELL

Keep the small things together.

A proposed removable cover for a notebook or everyday bag pocket. A simple wet-weather kit: keys, dry cloth and a place for the things you want to keep together.

Use / experiment / limits
Try the ritual
Pack a small kit before a wet-weather outing. Use an existing protective pouch, keep hands free and change the outing when conditions are unsafe.
First experiment
Test a paper fit and closure indoors. A later material prototype needs seam, leakage, durability and repair testing before a weatherproof claim.
Proposed construction
Replaceable sleeve / accessible closure / repair patch
Know the boundary
Concept only. No tested water resistance or protection for electronics. Not flood gear or a reason to enter water, storm drains or closed routes.

ONE PLACE. MANY WAYS TO LIVE.

Let the season
shape the ritual.

A coastal walk, a warm inland afternoon, an evening at home: the same object can have a different use. The Weather & Living Atlas brings historical context, seasonal patterns and practical choices into the picture.

Open the 25-mile atlas

Historical patterns support planning. Check current weather, heat, air quality and route advisories before acting.

03 / A LENDING REHEARSAL

Try the loop.
Keep the learning.

Choose an object, describe a use, create a demo card and return with one observation. Everything stays in this browser. No real loan or submission is created.

  1. 01Choose an idea
  2. 02Plan a use
  3. 03Rehearse a loan
  4. 04Return a learning

Use an existing object or a paper sketch. No hardware, inventory or pickup is supplied.

YOUR CARD GOES HERE

A little experiment.
A useful answer.

Pick an object to begin. This is a rehearsal of how a future library might work.

Demo notes save only in this browser when storage is available.

04 / CONNECTED TO LOCAL OBJECT FACTORY

From shelf
to bench.
And back again.

The library would test usefulness before a proposed local workshop commits to making more. TURN connects directly to the factory’s focus-dial study; the other library objects extend its quiet, repairable design questions.

Proposed workshop and separate design study; no operating factory or built hardware claimed. The workshop connection is a proposed workflow. Demo notes are not sent to a factory.

Product brief
Problem / audience
People may want to try an occasional object before buying it; makers need useful, consent-based feedback before producing more. Local adults, small households and makers exploring everyday focus, comfort and outdoor rituals.
This release
This release: accessible concept catalog, useful first experiments, atlas connections, local demo card, reflection, export and clear.
Before a physical pilot
A physical pilot needs a named operator, tested units, accessible pickup, cleaning and inspection, repair capacity, liability review, transparent terms and a real inventory ledger before reservations can begin.
What to measure
First evaluate whether people understand the concept boundary, can finish the demo without help and can describe one useful change. A future supervised pilot could track reuse, maintenance time and completed returns.
Out of scope
No sales, live inventory, availability claims, deposits, identity collection, logistics, autonomous AI or community submissions in this release.
Business-case outline
Hypothesis
A small shared pool could reduce unnecessary ownership and reveal which objects deserve local repair and production. This is an untested hypothesis, not an impact claim.
Costs to model
Model prototype and replacement cost, inspection and cleaning time, storage, staffing, repair parts, loss, insurance and accessible pickup. Operator time may dominate inexpensive objects.
Possible operating models
Compare a free supervised research pool, partner-supported library and later paid membership only after operational evidence. No partner or funding commitment is claimed.
Decision rule
Proceed from paper studies to a supervised pilot only if a named operator can support safe use and returns. Stop or redesign objects with weak utility, unclear instructions or excessive maintenance.
Evidence needed
Proposed interviews and observation of consenting adults; no participant research, fabricated testimonials or measured demand is claimed.
Research method / artwork provenance

Object utility is a design hypothesis, developed from everyday use cases. No interviews, product trials, measured performance or demand study have been completed. Weather context comes from the linked atlas’s source and method appendix. The next research step would compare paper rituals with existing belongings, using consenting adults and explicit observations.
