Marine Layer — the fog log
Twelve months of when the sky opened over El Segundo, read hour by hour from KLAX.
/marine-layer has been a name on this site since April, cited in four papers, linked from four JSON surfaces, and pointed at nothing. It is a room now, and it has an instrument.
The room is the part that was already written: eight weeks of sitting in eight El Segundo places, from the Plaza Dawn Sit to the Pier Closer, with the format, the stewardship ladder, and the five principles. One of them already read "the marine layer is the bell."
The instrument is new. Twelve months of hourly sky condition from KLAX, four and a half kilometres up the coast, drawn as one chart — a thin row per day, grey from sunrise until the deck broke, then blue. May Gray, June Gloom and Fogust show up as bands instead of jokes. Last June, twenty-six of thirty mornings started under a deck and the median one opened at 10:53.
The definition is printed next to the chart so you can argue with it: the lowest broken or overcast ceiling below three thousand feet, cleared and held for two hours after sunrise. Few and scattered do not count. Three honest outcomes, not two — it opened at a time, it never opened, or there was nothing over you to begin with.
Nothing transitions. No cron, no wallet, no second person. The day's answer is computed from the date every time the page loads, which is the only reason it will still be right in November.
