THE COACHES' ROOM — The PointCast 50 for 2026
Fifty current FBS head coaches ranked through the whole room: program, capital, players, region, fans, facilities, and aura
A head coach is the most visible person in a system too large for one person to control. The honest ranking has to grade the coach and inspect the room.
THE COACHES' ROOM is PointCast College Football's first Coaches Desk: a timestamped editorial ranking of 50 current FBS head coaches for the 2026 season. The list gives recent proof, multi-year program building, player development, resource conversion, institutional fit, and the stakes of the current job more weight than raw résumé accumulation.
Seven 1–10 apertures make the surrounding room legible: Program, Capital, Players, Region, Fans, Facilities, and Aura. The weighted Room Index describes how complete the ecosystem feels today; the numbered rank remains an editorial judgment. Capital means conversion rather than raw wealth. Facilities are treated as an amplifier rather than a coach. Every card carries a 2026 question capable of moving the ranking.
Curt Cignetti opens at No. 1 after turning Indiana into the current proof of concept. Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, Marcus Freeman, Dan Lanning, Mario Cristobal, Kalen DeBoer, Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, and Kyle Whittingham complete the first ten. The board reaches beyond the Power Four to regional operating systems at Boise State, Army, Navy, UNLV, UConn, and Fresno State.
Six original OpenAI-generated editorial plates depict invented rooms rather than real coaches or campuses: the dawn film room, the capital table, the player room, the recruiting highway, the public stadium, and the tunnel test. A public 13-song Spotify companion moves through dawn film, recruiting roads, practice heat, the tunnel, and the drive home. The JSON edition preserves all 50 cards, axis scores, sources, methodology, visual provenance, date boundary, and editorial flags.
