What to bring.
Core
- Charged battery pack and short cable
Outlets at the gate are a lottery. Your battery is not.
- Airline app, signed in
Rebooking often moves faster in the app than in the line. Do both at once.
- Empty water bottle
Through security empty, fill at a station after.
- Warm layer
Terminals and planes run cold.
- Headphones
The gate announcements will still get through. Everything else will not.
- Real snacks
Gate food closes earlier than you think on a late night.
- Medications in your carry-on
If you get separated from your checked bag overnight, you still have them.
- A kid kitTraveling with family
Charged tablet, headphones, a change of clothes, wipes, snacks.
Timeline
How it goes.
- First delay
Check the app for the reason and new time. Look at other flights to your destination right away.
- Long delay
Get in the agent line and call or chat with the airline at the same time.
- Settle in
Find a seat near your gate, not at it. Charge to full while you can.
- Overnight
Ask what the airline provides when it cancels: meal vouchers and hotels vary by airline and cause.
The moves
What helps.
- Know your rights: check the airline's customer service commitments and the U.S. DOT dashboard for refunds and rebooking.
- Be kind to the gate agent. They are the one person who can fix it.
Skip
- Leaving the gate area without notifications on
- Draining your phone on video before boarding
Watch for
- Gate changes. Turn on app notifications and check the board on every walk.
- Leaving the secure area for a hotel means security again in the morning. Plan the time.
