Core
- Beach cart with wide wheels
Regular wagon wheels sink. Wide ones float over sand.

Reapply after swimming and every two hours.
- Cooler with water and lunch
The nearest snack is a long walk on hot sand.
- Sandals for the walk
Dry sand on a hot afternoon can burn feet.
- Rash guardSwimming and boogie boarding
Sun protection you do not have to reapply.
Nice to have

Timeline
How it goes.
- Before
Check the surf report and tide. Arrive early for parking and morning calm.
- Arrive
Set up in sight of an open lifeguard tower. Note the tower number as your meeting spot.
- During
Swim in front of the lifeguard. Re-anchor shade when the wind picks up.
- After
Pack out all trash. Rinse at the showers before the car.
The moves
What helps.
- Ask the lifeguard about conditions. They are glad you asked.
- Caught in a rip current: stay calm and do not swim against it. If able, swim parallel to shore to escape, then return at an angle away from the current. If you cannot escape, float or tread water and wave and call for help.
- Shuffle your feet in shallow water to warn stingrays away.
Skip
- Glass
- Unanchored umbrellas
- Swimming at closed towers
Watch for
- Rip currents, shore break and sneaker waves. Never turn your back on the ocean with small kids.
- Sun reflects off sand and water. You burn faster than you think, even under shade.
