What to bring.

Core

  • Tickets for everyone, printed or on one phone

Graduations often cap tickets per graduate and scan at the gate.

  • Clear bag

Many schools use stadium bag rules for graduation too.

  • Water bottle, if allowed

Check whether sealed or empty bottles are allowed. Turf in June is hot.

  • Hat and sunglasses

Afternoon ceremonies face whichever way the stadium faces.

  • A named meet-up spot after

The field floods with families. Pick a landmark outside the scrum and text it to the graduate.

  • A plan for grandparentsParent or grandparent

Ask about accessible seating and drop-off ahead of time. Stadium stairs are steep.

  • Phone zoom or a camera with a long lensThe family photographer

Your graduate will be very small and very fast across the stage.

  • Phone battery packThe family photographer

Video of the walk, then two hundred photos after.

Nice to have

  • Stadium seat cushion

Two hours of names on aluminum.

Timeline

How it goes.

  1. Before

Read the school's graduation page for tickets, bags, parking and what time gates open.

  2. Arrive

Get there when gates open. Sit on the side the graduates walk to, if you can tell which.

  3. During

Listen for the row before your graduate's to get the camera up in time.

  4. After

Go to the meet-up spot, not the field. Leis and flowers wait until you find each other.

The moves

What helps.

  • Air horns and noisemakers are often banned and get confiscated at the gate. Cheer instead.
  • Restaurants nearby fill up on graduation night. Book ahead or plan a backyard dinner.

Skip

  • Air horns
  • Balloons in the stands
  • Big bags

Watch for

  • Heat on turf can be much hotter than the forecast. Older relatives first: water and shade.
  • Crowds on stadium stairs after the ceremony. Wait five minutes and let it clear.
