The tradition · 19th c.–present
Konbit (collective work party)
In a konbit, a Haitian work party since at least the 19th century, neighbours work one farmer's field together, often to drums, conch shells and work songs, while the host provides a meal.

How a note would work
Hoes are earned by joining a neighbour's field day and spent when your own plot needs hands; the host provides the meal. They are never bought or cashed out.
