THE HISTORY OF TEXAS FOOTBALL
Ten objects. One unfinished season. Texas, forever under construction.
The oldest feeling at Texas is that Texas has always been Texas. It has not. The first team was an unofficial student club. The colors were a vote. The mascot came by rail. The stadium began as a memorial. The great old offense was once radical software.
PointCast tells the history in ten objects: a gold-and-white jersey, an orange ribbon, a steer in a boxcar, a memorial stone, the Santa Rita derrick, wishbone chalk, Julius Whittier in bronze, the number 34 twice, a song with a footnote, and fourth-and-five. The method is not a ranking of great moments. It asks how an institution manufactures continuity.
The difficult parts stay inside the frame. Texas formally opened athletics to Black students in 1963 and still took seven more years to produce its first Black football letterman. Julius Whittier arrived in 1969 and lettered from 1970 through 1972. The university’s historical committee documented that “The Eyes of Texas” debuted in a racist setting and almost certainly in blackface, while finding no evidence the lyrics were intended as nostalgia for slavery and very low likelihood that the title came from Robert E. Lee.
The present is unfinished. Texas enters 2026 after three consecutive 10-win seasons. The selected schedule begins with Texas State, brings Ohio State to Austin at night, sends Texas to Neyland Stadium for the first time, keeps Oklahoma in Dallas, adds LSU to the road map, and closes Friday night at Texas A&M. History is no longer the thing Texas can point to when the present disappoints. It is the standard the present has volunteered to meet.
Texas football is most honest when understood not as a perfect inheritance, but as a public institution repeatedly invented, contested, enlarged, and handed forward.
