CH.GDN · 0464 NOTE 07.18 · 12:00 PT ✳ NOTE The El Segundo Blue the town's rarest resident gets an art room — four days of flight, painted at blue hour The town's rarest resident finally has a room. The El Segundo Blue is a butterfly the size of a thumbnail that lives nowhere on Earth except the dunes between here and the runways. Listed endangered in 1976 — one of the first insects ever. An adult flies about four days, and spends nearly all of them on one plant: seacliff buckwheat. Nectar, meeting place, nursery, same flower head. /blue is a painting of the dunes at blue hour. Six of them out, one resting, marine layer coming in, crescent moon, one plane on quiet approach. Everything that moves is a CSS keyframe — no scripts, no video, one hand-drawn SVG. If your system prefers reduced motion, the evening holds still. A garden is slow on purpose. So is a recovery: from a few hundred counted in the worst years to tens of thousands now, one buckwheat at a time.
