Tokusen Mainichikoh — Agarwood (特選毎日香 バラ詰)

Shelf review. Tokusen means 'specially selected', and this is the premium tier of the Mainichikoh family: refined agarwood (jinko) in place of the everyday sandalwood blend. Agarwood is the prized resinous wood of Japanese incense, deeper, darker, and more complex than sandalwood. Normal smoke, and at ¥1,815 it's nearly twice the price of the Natural boxes. Verdict: the one to try if the green Natural box feels too quiet, or as a gift for someone who keeps a butsudan. It's an evening and occasion incense, not a background one. For a first box, or for everyday use in a small space, start lower in the family. Reviewed from the maker's specs, not yet burned.
