Paper for a station that isn’t on yet.

8 sheets for Main Street, the library board and the coffee shop corkboard, for when the Radio El Segundo pilot is ready to be talked about. Each prints on its own letter page. No frequency, phone number or launch date anywhere: the station does not have them yet.

Letter paper, portrait, “background graphics” on. Ask before you post anything.

Neighbor
voice.

One resident, one story, recorded with consent.

Every hour of Radio El Segundo keeps 8 min for one neighbor and one story, and The Town Desk gives it 5 minutes. Tell us yours, or tell us who to ask. We will ask things like:

  1. How long have you been here, and what brought you?
  2. Where in town do you go that most people don't know about?
  3. What changed here that you miss, and what changed that you are glad about?
  4. Who should we talk to next?

I may ask for my full name, last name or any part of the recording to be left out, before or after it airs. After it airs, the station will remove it from its own feeds and pages within seven days.

Underwrite
The Town Desk.

Underwriting from local businesses, credited on air the noncommercial way.

What a credit sounds like

“Support for The Town Desk comes from [business], [what it is in five to eight words], on [street] in El Segundo.”

Where it runs

  • 14:00 in The Town Desk, read as written.
  • :58 of the hour, once the station runs around the clock: underwriting credits and legal id.

The short version

Underwriting credits name and describe; they do not sell. No calls to action, no prices.

The rules

  1. Name the business and say what it is and where. That is all.
  2. No prices, discounts, "best", "call now" or "visit today".
  3. Same length every time, about 15 seconds.
  4. The host reads it as written; no ad-libbed endorsements.
  5. Underwriters never get a say in what the show covers. Say so in the agreement.

How to tune in.

A tuning guide for a station that is still on the workbench. Turn the knobs in order.

  1. Knob 1 · Phase 0. Start here.

    Internet stream and podcast feed

Anyone with a connection. No range limit.

  2. Knob 2 · Phase 2 pilot, one location.

    Part 15 street transmitter

Roughly a block or two. Enough for Main Street, a park, a beach lot or a drive-in event.

  3. Knob 3 · Phase 2 conversations, Phase 3 launch.

    HD Radio subchannel lease

The host station's whole coverage area, which in Los Angeles means the full South Bay and more.

  4. Knob 4 · Phase 3, if a window opens and a channel exists.

    Low Power FM license

A few miles. One LPFM in El Segundo would cover most of the town.
